1922 Proof and High Relief Peace Dollars
In addition to the common regular strikes, there are a handful of other 1922 proof and high relief Peace dollar varieties to at least be aware of.
They are rare to the point that it is extremely unlikely you would have one or ever even see one.
The first variety is called a high relief Peace dollar. This variety is not widely known, nor is it included in many collections because of its rarity and value. It is discussed here for the sake of completeness.
1922 Silver Peace Dollar Trial.
Trial pieces of high-relief Silver Peace Dollar 1922 were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in January 1922 and nearly all 35,401 of these coins were later melted.
Only one coin with the 1922 high-relief obverse and 1921 reverse has been located. Collectors considering any alleged 1922 high-relief Peace dollar should have the coin authenticated. You almost certainly have a regular strike 1922 $1 coin, hence why an expert would need to verify otherwise.
The second variety is a 1922 high relief proof. Probably only 10-20 relief Proofs were made in 1922. Both sides of the high relief 1922 Peace dollars were probably made by reworking certain elements of the high relief 1921 Proof Peace dollars. On the 1922 Proofs the tip of Liberty’s bust engages the top of the 9 in the date.
These Proofs are relatively new to numismatics, most of them debuting in the early 2000s. As such, research on these issues is ongoing with new facts added to the information pool whenever an example comes up for study. These silver dollars are very rare and seldom offered in any venue, privately or at public auction.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries
Stack’s Bowers Galleries offered a pair of Proof 1922 Peace dollars. In the not-so-distant past but they did not meet the reserve.
Likewise it is thought that 11 High Relief Sand-Blast Proofs of the date are available to collectors.
Furthermore Only the most ardent Peace dollar enthusiasts are apt to pursue these very rare Proofs. There is an antiqued finish Proof-64 example of the date that is unique to our knowledge.
The third variety is a regular relief proof.
Likewise it is thought that only 10-20 were minted. The numbers speak for this elusive issue. It would be unusual to find one out in the wild today. A few other varieties exist. They are mostly made up of unique combinations of finish styles, mulings, and trials.
